Day 19 of Fasting

Day 19 of 21 – January 20, 2023
“The Spirit Works”

Romans 8:26-28 - Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.

If you are looking for a job, one thing your potential employer will not know about you is your work ethic. Sure, you may have an impressive resumé, have notable references and even give the right answers in the job interview, but it is not until they see your work over time that they can know whether you get things done.

The Holy Spirit gets things done! And He’s been doing so for a long time! In just these three verses, He helps, makes intercession, searches hearts, and keeps us present before God.

The Spirit works on our behalf for us. He works through spiritual disciplines (that is, the practice of training people to obey) such as Fasting and Praying.  The Spirit works to help us become Jesus’ disciples. The Spirit of God works even when we do not realize He is. And it is for our good.

We have the Holy Spirit perfectly working alongside us, and then there is us. We mess up. If we are honest, we have probably had more failures than successes. Truth is we are going to experience both in life. But to know that I have sincerely given it to God with praying and fasting takes the intense pressure of the burden of failure away. In fact, the failures, the successes, the good, the bad and the ugly (ALL of me) belongs to Him.

I have learned over the last twenty years that the Holy Spirit operating through these spiritual disciplines helps me to better live with the good and the bad. I am thankful He just keeps working in and with me. But one and the same Spirit works all these things - 1 Corinthians 12:11

I made mention in last Sunday’s message that “prayer doesn’t just change things, it changes me.” That is exactly what God wants to do in our lives. He is changing us and making us more and more dependent on HIM.

So, as we near the end of this 21-day journey, trust that God’s Spirit is working to change you to be more like Jesus and live in peace, knowing He has it all under control. As a mentor tells me often, “Just love God and He will take care of the rest.”

He’s working it out for our good,
Pastor Brian Rabon
